The snowy white spider remained still for the photograph like a statue of ice. She watched Jessie bend down with her camera, analyzing the image. There was no doubt that the boyish girl was fond of photography. There was a certain air about her very pose; the way she held the camera and the smile that had come to brighten her lips. It seemed like a far more natural state for the girl.
The camera clicked twice. Alice kept her frozen stance until it the artificial eye was finally lowered. Then she shifted her weight a little to one stiff side. Jessie was close, but it only lasted a second before she turned away. She wondered if the other had noticed the slight crack in her guard. Such as a spider was quick to rebuild a portion of their web, it had been frosted over quick. That had been two times it had cracked a little this day. Two times in front of the same person. And quite frankly, it irritated her a bit. Sure, she had fixed it quickly, but if the minor fracture had been noticed, then there was really no cover up for it. Oh well. Covering things up was one of the few things Alice could do best.
Surmising the practice session was at its end, the spider offered a wayward flick of her hand. "I suppose we should call it a day, then, miss McKnight." She didn't feel too tired herself, but her voice seemed to betray her regardless. Then with a brief half-hearted bow, "Thank you for the practice, once again."
The farewell felt a little rushed, but spiders were not ones to linger for very long. Alice wasn't any exception to that rule of nature.
