Name:
Haruka Oh (Skittles)
School Attending: Spica
Age/ Year in School: (choose one below)
~ Appearance ~
Face Claim: Kochou // Taisho Baseball Girls
Hair Color:
A gray-tinted tone that isn't quite sure if it's light black or dark brown, honestly unable to make up its mind about which it is in the end. The true tone is honestly in the eye of the beholder,
Hairstyle:
Haruka's hair is long in a manner befitting a traditional Japanese maiden, to chest length when unfettered by differing hairstyles. That said she typically keeps it bound to the side in a pair of pigtails held in place with blue scrunchies, ribbons or hair ties depending on the outfit. Matching the traditional length are bangs cut straight across in a proper hime cut which sometimes sees a single hair escape into an odd cowlick.
Eye Color:
Hazel
Height:
5'2"
What kind of clothes does you character wear when she's not in uniform?
Out of habit Haruka opts for very traditional clothing when she's not sporting Spica's trademark miniskirt. Most commonly this means the white kimono with red hakama of a shrine maiden, suitable for both sweeping at a shrine and practicing traditional martial arts as her family is wont to do. Despite difficulties with her family in the past she still finds this the most comfortable clothing to move around in, rather than be confined by tighter fitting pants or tops; she still appreciates the aesthetic value of a classy traditional look as well.
What Sports/activities is you character involved in?
Archery: Yes
Martial Arts: Yes, specialist in the naginata.
Is your character on the Student Council? -No
Please explain your character's personality in 200 words or more: More than anything else in the world perhaps, Haruka finds herself to need control over whatever's going on in her life. She becomes incredibly anxious and outright upset when she doesn't have some facet of this control; uncertainty is one of her greatest enemies. Deep inside her is the fear that losing control means losing herself, and experience has taught her just what the cost of such a situation is. Haruka is fairly prideful about her skill in martial arts and is known to brag about it and anything else she sees herself as having talent in. This is a way for her to reinforce her self value as much as it is just to show off how great she thinks she is. Though very loyal to those who'd dare to become close to her she can be quite insufferable because of this. Complicating matters, she suffers from Bipolar Disorder due to traumatic events in her childhood and has bouts of depression occasionally. During these times she fights hard to mask her depressive state with emotionless fronts and fits of violence at the expense of others. It's the only way she can prevent herself from falling into hysteric bouts of crying. A strong girl of samurai stock should be above such sorry states, no matter how deeply she hurts inside at those times.
What does you character think of the Etoile position as a whole? Etoile is a long running tradition of the three schools and by that certainly is due a little bit of deference. A certain type of girl is suitable for the position and having a couple to inspire others to be kind and love their sisters is all well and fine. Everyone needs an example to follow, an ideal to strive for after all!
Does your character want to be an Etoile someday? That said she feels that it's really something for girls who are more romantically inclined than herself. She feels as though her family's martial arts traditions make her unifit for such a girly ideal, therefore she neither strives for it nor demeans others who do wish to seek it.
What does your character think of the current etoiles?
What does your character think of the other schools? In all honesty Haruka has a real problem with the feminine ideals espoused by Miator in its aim to create submissive, ladylike girls. Haruka yearns to be a strong independent woman free from the constraints of others' demands. Spica is therefore a far superior school in her opinion since it strays from traditional submissiveness that's been expected in Japanese society. LeRim is an odd mix of the two which she's not sure how to feel about; she does like the fact that LeRim encourages its daughters to explore interests as much as possible though. Freedom is a wonderful gift to have.
~History~
History before Astraea Hill:
Like so many girls on noble Astraea Hill Haruka comes from a family which holds tradition to be of the highest ideals, expecting each generation to follow the same paths as the one before it. Children of the Oh line are descended from a mostly dead samurai clan which lost what influence outside the martial arts it held after the Meiji Restoration. As such there is quite a lot of focus on maintaining old traditions which the family has been known for. Ladies can choose either the naginata or ikeabana, should they not be of a more martial mindset; the men practice kendo or take up kabuki. In this environment Haruka endured parents who tried to dictate every facet of her daily activity. Every lesson, every meal was planned out to ensure she'd become a proper young lady in the grand tradition of the family. Often she would just be left with an instructor so that she could soak up the atmosphere and expertise of the arts without parental interference. Unfortunately she endured a teacher who thought her unfit to be his student and responded to any fault with corporal punishment and verbal abuse.
In response to this Haruka decided all she could do was to seize control of her life to ensure someone didn't hurt her like that again. From that moment forward she insisted on being in charge of arranging her own lessons and training. Thankfully her parents saw this as their daughter having gained confidence in herself. Allowing her to mature on her own also allowed them to focus on their two sons who were uncertain which path to follow. In the meantime Haruka found herself occasionally reading American comics in secret after discovering a character she identified with. So much so that even now she keeps a picture of him in her desk in the Spica dorms as inspiration to continue being proud and in charge.
Sample Post: The pigtailed samurai awaited her honored mother with all the patient grace a student of the traditional martial arts could be expected to hone. Simplicity was important on this day to show deference to her elder. Not that her usual clothing would have been any more complex than this of course. Just her typical hakama and kimono that made her look quite a bit like a shrine maiden as much as it did a martial artist. It was a big day because at long last she would be receiving her school uniform in preparation for beginning an education away from home. Thanks to family savings she'd been able to attend a private school which would surely help her become even more of a refined lady. That was her mother's hope at least; Haruka was herself looking forward to being in control of her daily life in a greater capacity than she'd enjoyed previously. As her mother entered the tatami room Haruka bowed respectfully in greeting and did her best to contain her smile. At long last the time had come to embark on her own!
"Good day, mother," she spoke softly.
"Good day, daughter," the elder Oh spoke, then set a white box down in front of her. Could this be?
"Thank you, mother," Haruka answered before carefully opening the box to find that yes, her new uniform was inside! A lovely, crisp white one with a blue shirt and.. what was that extra piece? Where was the skirt? Haruka held it up to examine it, expression confounded as she tried to comprehend it.
"It's a miniskirt, daughter.. hardly traditional, but still classy in appearance," the mother spoke, somewhat amused at her daughter's confusion.
"E... EEEEEEEEEHHHH? How can it be a miniskirt? They didn't say anything about miniskirts in the pamphlet! Why was I not informed? I can't wear this!" Haruka shouted, losing her cool as she stared at the skirt. This was going to take a lot of adjustment.
