Kikuchi Makoto - The IDOLM@STER
Hair Color:
Black. Just black.
Hairstyle:
Ren wears her hair short. Split just above her left eyes, she allows her bangs to land just below her brow line. Jagged locks of ebony poke out just above her shoulders, though it tends to be longer in the front than the back. Two strands of hair stick out like antennae; no matter how hard she tries, she can't seem to keep them down.
Eye Color:
Greyish Blue
Height:
159cm (62.6 in)
What kind of clothes does you character wear when she's not in uniform?
Ren is commonly seen in looser tops, hoodies, or sweaters accompanied with a pair of shorts or pants. While they are not necessarily manly clothes, but they seem a lot more masculine on her than on any of her peers. Maybe if she were more feminine looking, the outfits wouldn't seem so androgynous? But the idol does enjoy her boyish charm, often trying on a male persona at the encouragement of her peers. However, it's not uncommon to see the dark haired girl dressed in more feminine outfits, especially considering her profession, though they're rare to see outside of theater performances.

[VOICE]
Takahashi Ren.
A trainee idol for the ever so popular JPop group, GEM247. A girl whosecretly collects Super Sentai merchandise in embarrassingly high numbers and has a knack for soccer - she's obviously not your everyday cutsey pop idol. What else is expected from a girl raised with four older brothers? Adopting their nurturing and kind personalities, Ren has grown to be much more of an "older brother" type than any type of "princess". A rule-abiding, playful friend who can be a tad bit blunt under certain circumstances, she always takes the time to thank her small fanbase, greeting each of them with bright smiles.
Aside from her ikemen charm, Ren is also renowned for her outstandingly mediocre academic performance. When mixed with some of her smarter peers Ren becomes a bit self-conscious about her grades, quickly changing the topic or creating excuses when the subject is brought up. Despite the endless effort put in through tutors, after class help, and extra credit, Ren can only seem to average with mid to high 70s in just about all of her classes. Her friends consider her the epitome of someone who tries their hardest but simply can't reach above average. Her parents and teachers condemn these low grades, however, knowing that it's her peak and (unfortunately) can't do much better.
"Put her into anything and you know she would give it her all."
Was a common description of Ren as her soccer coaches conversed on the sidelines. The determination and perseverance that never falters, whether it be idol work or academics, her fighting spirit is not easily weakened.
Good heart aside, the ikemen idol does have a more embarrassing traits that she tries to cover with her outwardly friendly aura. Her biggest flaw being the type that becomes awkward when help-seeking situations arise, especially when tears are shed. How is she to help? Her mind begins to over think the situation before leaving her with an overwhelmed expression. Romance also drives Ren into this awkward limbo, just the topic alone sends her in a pink haze. From nervous blathers of small chit chat to a tomato-red face an awkward yelling, Ren often believes that she has the worst neural reactions to such sensitive things.

What does you character think of the Etoile position as a whole?
Ren is rather fond of the title of Etoile, knowing that it's a great opportunity for school age girls to achieve a bit of a celebrity status throughout the campus. Not only does it encourage teamwork, but it also urges girls to find love in one another whether it be romantic or friendly.
Does your character want to be an Etoile someday?
Would she mind to be an Etoile one day? No, of course not. In fact, Ren would be rather honored to be given such a prestigious title in the school. But being part GEM comes with the strict, no dating rule to maintain her focus and "pure image". Though her company may not see it any more than a simple extra curricular title, Ren fears that taking the chance may lead to unexpected consequences.
What does your character think of the current etoiles?
Kagami and Maiko appear to be a fated couple in Ren's eyes. The stories she's heard of the two so far have been nothing but beautiful, Shakespearean tales. Do all romances on Astraea Hill fall in such an elegant manner? Kagami, an adorable young woman whose gentle soul brought a smile to others. And Kagami, a beautiful princess who acted as knightly guide for her shyer peer. The idol could only hope to find a storybook romance as perfect as the Etoiles'.
What does your character think of the other schools?
The dark haired holds no resentment towards the other schools unlike some of the students who like to spice up the campus drama with a little friendly competition. Rather, Ren sees each school as how they are supposed to be viewed - for girls with different talents in different areas. Miator was obviously the academics, a long shot for someone with grades like her's to get into. While LeRim was more of a motherly, nurturing school. Though the idol was drawn to it's laid back atmosphere and cute uniforms, she settled with Spica to keep up with her boyish expectations and to return to her first love of soccer.
~History~
Please write in 100 words or more your character's history before she came to Lulim.
On the outskirts of Sendai lived Ren Takahashi, a girl with poor grades and a large family; four older brothers, her mother, and her father. She grew up with an unusual fixation with Super Sentai, the masked rangers who paraded across the television screen in color coordinated leotards and defeated ugly aliens with unnecessary explosions. Being an teenage female, Ren was well out of the show's demographics, which was originally intended for elementary aged boys. But being a girl who preferred race cars to ponies, pants to skirts, and action to romance; it didn't concern her much at all. Though not everything was all boyish for the little Japanese girl. It was the Golden Age for idol groups in Japan; the hearts of males and females were captured by these angelic maidens, the most popular unit being GEM247. Singing and dancing in unison with the cute girls parading on the stage in their matching uniforms, playing and joking around on their very own television show - these idols were not only a well-trained entertainment machine but a role model whose "anyone-can-do-it" stories were amplified through their media appearances. Any teenage girl dreamed of following in their footsteps, to be an idol was the teenage equivalent to being a princess. Every so often, new girls were added to the group as the older members graduated.
It was a day of shock when the most popular member announced her graduation; being the face of GEM, no one new where the group would go from there. However, the rippling news didn't stop there. It was then when a small buzz began to spread around in the city, soon escalating into a wildfire of excitement. The ever-so-popular all-female idol group, GEM247, was holding auditions in Sendai for it's next generation members.
The chance to become famous, really famous, had finally descended upon them! She sacrificed soccer to enhance her skills in singing and dancing, proving to her family just how serious she was about joining something as unexpectedly feminine as a pop idol group. They cheered her on, the audition becoming a redemption for Ren's more feminine side.
The cuter, more feminine girls were sidetracked with talk and fantasies of being an idol, singing and dancing to the unit's chart topping songs as the patiently waited for auditions to begin. It was much to everyone's surprise when they noticed such a handsome girl pass through the doors; she held a boyish aura, but definitely lacked the essence of an idol. Ren could only grow less confident in her abilities when surrounded by all these flawless girls. It was only the first batch of auditioning girls and there were well over one hundred heads! Did she really have what it takes to stand out in this sea of talent?
The chatter died down as the girls were called individually for their first screening. A stale, nervous aura clouded the once cheerful atmosphere.
Sitting impatiently among the crowd of auditioning girls was Ren; wearing her hair short and plain and wearing a loose tee hanging from her handsome frame, she gathered many admiring glances from the other girls. Not because of her "idol aura" (which she lacked completely) but her boyish charm, something that she secretly wished wasn't her key feature. She grew determined to show the judges that there was more to her character than her tomboy persona. Her unwavering determination to make an impression on the judges returned in her favor.
Her handsome stature stood before the finalists for her last solo performance. Ren's powerful, masculine vibrato shook her spectators, the countless hours of rehearsed dancing visible in her flawlessly executed choreography. As hoped, Takahashi Ren had thoroughly impressed the judges, though the boyish aura she carried still lingered around her.
Just as all new recruits, Ren started off as a Trainee GEM. She took notes as the veteran members gave lectures and tips, studying the idol lifestyle as she rehearsed for her first upcoming performance. Practice times varied; she either worked until late at night or until the early evening, all depending on how well she and her fellow trainees did that day. There was a lot more to being an idol than the girls had anticipated. Not only did they have to perfect their singing and dancing as a unit but also learn idol mannerisms, public speech, and stage presence. The young idol was unprepared for such demanding work evident in her declining grades.
Their first handshake event had arrived, a big crowd was drawn due to the main GEM members' presence.Long lines crowded each of the girls' designated spots, many of the fans bearing gifts for their most favorite members. The Tokyo GEMs received most of the traffic, the fans dispersing to encourage the trainees after meeting with their oshimen. The girls greeted their large male fanbase with sweet smiles and kind voices, signing merchandise and briefly conversing with their fans. Ren, whose booth lied at the very end of the hall, only had a small percentage of the occupants meet her, many of them greeting her with common phrases. Were they visiting her out of pity? The tomboy hated to be greedy but she could only wish that the other fans would genuinely approach her, too. She would be lying if she said she wasn't jealous of her fellow GEMs. A small cloud of regret shrouded the back corner of her mind, worried if she was even good enough to be exposed to the public eye.
With their daughter rising in apathy and declining in academics, Ren's parents decided to enroll their daughter into St Spica. It's all-female student body in a secluded area led them to have high hopes for a less intense stress zone for their overworked daughter. The school also proved to be a nice place for the girl to continue sports and further her academic work. A compromise was worked out between the Takahashi parents and the GEM talent agency noting that Ren would focus more on her academics for the time being with minimum appearances while picking up her idol work during summer and vacation breaks.

Sixth Year:
The uneventful year of a sixth grader in Tokyo.
Ren spent her year honing up her soccer skills anticipating to try out for her future junior high's soccer team. She recalls herself being much more tomboyish during this time and is often embarrassed of her brute behavior when looking back on it.
Ren spent her year honing up her soccer skills anticipating to try out for her future junior high's soccer team. She recalls herself being much more tomboyish during this time and is often embarrassed of her brute behavior when looking back on it.
Second Year:
It was no surprise that Ren had successfully passed the soccer tryouts seeing as she spent her entire sixth grade year playing pick-up ball and practicing drills with her eldest brother, a high school soccer player. It was a few practices in when her heart plucked by the team's manager and class president; no one would have expected the tomboyish girl to fall for the smartest guy in her grade.... and vice versa. The bespectacled president grew shy around Ren, the latter mistaking it disinterest. For the first time in her life, she began to research tips on how to become more feminine, beauty products, and fashion trends! Much to her surprise she actually enjoyed it; seeing all the work her peers put into their looks made her appreciate the art. Soon enough, she grew the urge to try it out for herself as well as to impress her crush. However, rushing head first into this project was not a good idea. Too embarrassed to ask anyone for assistance, Ren walked into class with a total makeover. It wasn't bad....just different. Odd stares and awkward compliments stirred an uneasy feeling in the ebony haired's belly, she hoped and prayed that she wouldn't have to run into the soccer manager today!
Yet she did.
A terrified freeze met a surprised gaze. The male chuckled before approaching Ren with soft smile, reaching to pat her hair softly. The tomboy's face stained red as they exchanged mutual feelings. The handsome intelligence falling for the tomboyish fool, both bonded by a love for soccer.
It was the weekend of their first date. They went to the mall. They went to the arcade. They held hands for the first time.
But he had an announcement that shook her:
"I'm moving."

Third Year:
Ren kept in touch with her soccer manager, both agreeing that despite their mutual feelings, it would be best if they were to move on and remain friends. If they were meant to be together, their paths would cross once again.
The healing Ren continued her soccer practices, this year's manager much stricter than the last. It was no secret that he pushed the young girl harder than the rest, using her hard working spirit to transform her into a well-rounded soccer ace. Games, tournaments, pick-up ball - Ren had become a one-gal team, her name was an intimidating tale to local opponents. But just as she had reached her highest peak, she steadily withdrew herself from the sport, focusing on her hidden love of the pop idol industry.
Though she may have reached more fame through soccer than the music industry. Her biggest break was appearing in a short, 15-second news segment on the new additions to GEM247. Though it was broadcast nationally, the short only depicted the girl posing for the journalists' flash frenzies in the midst of her new coworkers.

The butterflies that once fluttered in the idol's stomach steadily began to disappear as she was brought into a huddle. Words of encouragement were recited by the group's mature leader, the group's oldest member, releasing the group's shared anxiety with her motherly tone. It was their debut as a unit, the trainee group of GEM247's newest Sendai unit. A group of young women who had high aspirations to become the nation's top idol; do they have what it takes?
The huddle broke, hands replacing heads in the center of the band of girls. Here she was achieving a common dream with the city's newest idols, young ladies whom she felt very honored to call her fellow friends; this was a position the fifteen year old never would have imagined herself in a million years. Her attention was caught by a fair hand being placed on top of hers, shaking softly in the midst of the pile. Silver orbs traveled beside her noticing that it was one of the younger recruits. Snow white skin and a cute, button face cradled by her light brown locks, her looks alone could have easily gotten her into the group. It was also rumored that her weak personality is completely compensated by her gorgeous voice and range. With enough performances, she would definitely become "center" material.
"Give it your all okay?" the tomboy flashed a smile at the smaller girl, who returned a sheepish grin and a soft nod. Ah, she could only feel a twinge of jealousy when in the presence of someone so enviably feminine.
"G-E-M..." The leader yelled, starting off the cheer.
"-247!" the girls shouted as their hands exploded towards the sky, concluding the pre-show pep talk. As if on cue, the idol group's famous overture began to play, modified to fit the trainee groups. Dozens of multicolored glow sticks illuminated the pitched hall, shaking with the beat of the hyped song.
"G-E-M-247!"
The infectious chant echoed throughout the small concert room, giving the group of girls a rush of adrenaline. Tonight was the night of their first concert ever, fans crowded the GEM's custom Sendai theater, selling out the tickets in just a matter of days. These fans had such high hopes for these girls, Ren knew that she couldn't disappoint them.
One by one, the girls energetically sprinkled the stage, greeted by specks of green floating frantically in the sea of supporters. The idols waved and smiled as they got into position, appearing as impeccably cute and approachable as they did in photographs - it was this charm that had made them as famous as the are today. Celebrating their unique differences and the beauty that lies alongside their imperfections, this was what the tomboy had always enjoyed about the group. The suspense lingered in the audience as the overture came to a close, all girls positioned on stage, leaving only a split second of silence.
"PARTY!"
They all shouted in unison before breaking out into a simple, choreographed dance. They waved their arms, clapping with the rhythm as they lip-synced into their mics, moving around strategically before returning back to their assigned positions. The upbeat pace to the group's classic song kept the audience energized, the fan's organized wotagei chant giving the concert a genuine idol feel. The chanting, the lights, and most importantly the looks on her fans' faces; being able to be on the opposite side of a GEM concert... it was something Ren knew she wouldn't grow tired of.
The song concluded with a lowered tempo and a long note, the sea of colored illuminations waving frantically as the cheers grew louder. The girls bowed, introducing themselves with their unique signature phrase.
The tomboy stood at the end, flattening out her skirt as she watched her friends give their adorable introductions. But when they're not performing, whether it be on a show or in between song lists, the public is able to see what quirks lie beneath the feminine mask each of the idols carries. This goes for all idols, even those outside of the mega group, GEM247. The trainee team's leader is known for her hobby of gourmet cooking, the shortest girl enjoys watching professional hockey, even the aforementioned shy rookie has a love for cosplay cafes. It was this opportunity that the tomboy enjoyed the most. Not only did she learn more about her friends and seniors, but the public did as well, making them more approachable to their fans, aggrandizing the whole idea of GEM247, "idols you can meet".
A soft smile spread across the teen's boyish features as she watched her neighboring idol show off her enthusiastic introduction for the first time.
Alas, it was her turn. The crowd watched in silence, anticipating the last addition to the GEM family's catchphrase.
"Junior High Soccer Ace Renashi, also known as Takahashi Ren! It's a pleasure to meet you!"
The crowd cheered her on, embracing their differences.
