Name: Eriko Hayakawa *Ai Ichigo*
School Attending: Spica
Age/ Year in School: (choose one below)
~ Appearance ~ School uniform, Casual
Hair Color: A very auburn redhead, though under very bright lights it can look more maroon than usual.
Hairstyle: Eriko utilizes a variety of hairstyles just to keep the world guessing. Her hair itself would naturally hang to just past her shoulders if unstyled. Sometimes she'll pull it into a high ponytail, others into a pair of pigtails (both braided and not) and others just braid one side. Typically she has prominent bangs that she simply doesn't fuss with for whatever reason, which somehow just barely avoid getting in her eyes too badly.
Eye Color: Kind of a pale and subdued minty green.
Height: 5'0"
What kind of clothes does you character wear when she's not in uniform? Eriko likes to just be comfortable and her clothing emphasizes this. For warmer weather usually shorts and a t-shirt with sandals or athletic shoes; in colder seasons jeans with a sweatshirt. Every now and then she'll just literally throw on the first things she pulls out of the closet. A lot of her non-uniform clothing are random articles picked up at recycle clothing (second hand) stores, and therefore the selection is already random enough. Things from kind of outdated blouses and skirts to small sized men's clothes that are baggy on her. And for extra confusion she'll occasionally add an element to her outfits that doesn't belong - a baseball hat with girly clothes, a monocle ('borrowed' from the Lulim drama club) with pretty much anything, etc.
What Sports/activities is you character involved in?
Baseball:Yes
Is your character on the Student Council? No and has pretty much zero interest in being elected to it. It feels just like something that makes a girl feel more entitled than she should be, simply by virtue of being popular.
Please explain your character's personality in 200 words or more: Eriko can be very difficult to deal with on account of the fact that it's really hard to tell when she's telling the truth/being serious. Most of the time she speaks in dry tone that can border on monotone and emotionless. She's apt to respond to questions with little fibs or outright lies to the point where it's debateable as to whether she ever tells the truth. Over time she's grown to believe that she needs to maintain an air of mystery and avoid letting people into her life. It keeps her safe and prevents her from getting into a situation where she might let someone get too close, then just see them hurt her emotionally. The weirder stories she weaves about herself, the less inclined people are to be to try and break that barrier.
She has some abandonment issues after having been raised by a single father who passed when she was just seven. While not mistreated she was largely ignored by the relatives who were charged with taking care of her. Largely left to fend for herself she decided to put up walls to protect herself. Her interest and talent in baseball put her in an awkward situation with other girls (who largely thought she was too boyish to hang out with) and neighborhood boys (who thought playing with a girl was kind of weird). A family friend coached a local little league team and encouraged her to join, pretending she was a boy. It worked for three years thanks to the coach and her teammates keeping the secret. Then the league administration found out and insisted she be pulled out for her own protection, even though she'd not only held her own but flat out outplayed the boys on other teams.
The family insisted she not speak to the coach again and pressured the man to leave town so the family wouldn't be more embrarassed. She was heartbroken when she was told that the only adult who'd helped her was leaving. From that point on deception and defensive walls became a way of life. Snarky and odd as she can get, she actually hopes someone will put up with her long enough to pull her out into the sunlight again. Eriko doesn't dislike doing things with groups, hence why she's part of the baseball team at Spica.
With her teammates she's almost totally different - sure she still makes things up, but it's clear she's joking. She smiles and clearly enjoys herself. There's even a kind of bubbly nature to how she goes about things; the game is pure and untainted by the problems in her life. It's the one time she can be more honest. The moment practice or a game ends and she's right back to being a peculiar shut-in.
What does you character think of the Etoile position as a whole? A contest for girls who need to feel superior to others, capped off by being given some old fashioned status symbol. Not something that Eriko really cares for.
Does your character want to be an Etoile someday? As with the Student Council, Eriko holds no interest in running for Etoile, since she doesn't think anyone will get close enough to her to try without leaving her behind. If that were to change though.. who knows?
What does your character think of Shizuka Myuzu and Chokone Manatsu, the current etoiles? Eriko isn't familiar with the couple as individuals, but is aware of the supposed 'Etoile Curse'. Being superstitious herself she's almost certain that something will arise that splits them up. The curse hasn't been broken yet as far as her opinion goes. The smaller girl (Chokone) had better watch out, her 'love' will probably just skip town some day. That's the sort of thing Eriko thinks about the Etoiles.
What does your character think of the other schools? Surprisingly she's very into the rivalry between Spica and Miator. If it helps Spica get a leg up on the older school so be it.
~History~ History before Astraea Hill: Before being sent to school at Spica Eriko had a rough time of things. Her mother died during childbirth and she was raised by a single father who had a job that required him to travel all around Japan - he was a baseball player. Somehow he managed to raise her okay with the help of teammates and the club manager, and though he was tired out by the efforts he even started teaching her to play the game she was surrounded by. At a very young age she was already throwing pitches, playing catch and practicing her swing. Things were fine until that day when her father left to pursue baseball in America (where he'd be paid more money, so he could send Eriko to a good school); his plane crashed into the ocean and he was lost.
In the ensuing years Eriko was taken in by her mother's family, but never really fit in. Her main joy was pretending to a boy so she could play little league baseball thanks to a friend of her father's who'd just retired from the pros. She made some friends with teammates and found being in on a big secret to be really fun. That fun ended when she was outed and removed from the team for her 'protection'; actually parents of other teams' players pushed for her ouster after being embarrassed that their sons had been struck out repeatedly by a girl. Things were pretty miserable and Eriko took to just making things up when she didn't want to answer questions. Being odd and weird became a way to stop people from getting close; if they didn't close, they couldn't hurt her.
At long last one of her father's old teammates, now working for a different team's office, made an arrangement for her to live with him instead of family that didn't seem to care much for her. They'd never approved of their daughter marrying Eriko's father in the first place, and were happy to relinquish their guardianship of her. Only then did the ex-teammate reveal that her father had left a sizable inheritance (what remained of his contract money) for her to attend a good private school with. That school was the one her mother had attended - St. Spica's.
Sample post:
Eriko really didn't want to go to some weird private school, no matter how prestigious or close to where her guardian lived it was. It was some kind of religious institution, which probably meant they'd try to convert her to their faith or brainwash her or something. Worse still she knew nobody who went there and would probably be picked on because she was so new and weird. But that was part of the plan - friends just got taken away from you, so she'd just make things up and keep them all guessing about her. Better a mystery with no friends than vulnerable and being torn away from friends. There wouldn't be anything that was all that interesting about this 'St. Spica' school either, she was sure of it. They said her mom went there but what did that matter? She'd never known the woman.
It wasn't made any more palatable by the fact that Tatsuya, who was as close to being her friend as anyone was these days and also looked after her, worked for them. The greatest evil in the world. An organization that boasted so much success and rubbed it in your face. Like they were perpetually entitled to keep you underfoot. The Yomiuri Giants. How could he, after he and her father had played for that organization's greatest adversary? A lot of things in her life had revolved around baseball, and this was no exception. Though she would grudgingly admit he was still as nice as ever and actually seemed to care about her feelings.
"Join the martial arts club!" called out one girl as the auburn haired first year passed by the club/team booths. Of course it had to be that time of year.
Nope. Not going to happen - she didn't want to spend her afternoons punching people only to get problems in her hands later. That's what Tatsuya said happened to a friend of his who'd been practicing karate since he'd been a kid. Didn't sound like fun.
"The baseball team needs your support! Come join us!" she heard another pronounce.
Did her ears decieve her? Baseball? Baseball, here at St. Spica? Eriko stopped in place and s-l-o-w-l-y turned her eyes towards the girl who'd spoken. Nothing stood out about the girl that made her different than the others trying to trick her into joining a club. Except the baseball cap bearing a St. Spica logo (she assumed). There was a video playing showing footage of a game on a small TV that rested on a table behind the girl. Not softball, but real hardball baseball. Without realizing it she found herself walking over to the table and signing her name onto the team's sheet.
"So have you played before?" the girl wearing the hat asked.
"Yes. In another dimension," Eriko responded, blatantly lying to keep her defenses up. Somehow it was a lot harder when her one great love in life (so far) was the topic of discussion.
"Huh?" the girl asked, thrown off guard by the auburn haired girl's response.
"My goal is Koshien," Eriko added, finding herself strangely desiring to talk to this girl.
"The nationals? That's really ambitious!"
"Not just there. I want to play there for the Tigers," Eriko added, and for the first time in several weeks she did something unexpected even to her. She smiled. Maybe this wouldn't all be that terrible after all.
