Name: Jakushi Yarei [若麗 meaning 'young companion']
Gender: Female.
Age: 14
Year in school: Second
School Attending: St. Miator Girls' Academy
Partner: None
Room mate: Ryoko Ameterasu
Appearance: Yarei has very pale skin, taking more after her mother in that sense. Her collar and hip bones are both prominent, and she has a long neck. Her lips are a darkish red, even without make up, and she doesn't have very many curves – a straight-ish figure and a rather flat chest. Her arms are scrawny, but her legs are incredibly well muscled, although they've been getting a tad skinnier lately as well. Her abdominal muscles used to be strong, but they've faded a bit. Yarei also has large eyes, although not awkwardly so, a small nose, a well defined but not too angular jaw-line, and delicate eyebrows. She's used a special brand of mascara for quite some time, so her eyelashes have grown out a bit to a very flattering length.
Hair color: Mostly sea-green, but fades to teal, then fresh-water blue at the ends
Hair style: Her hair is very thick with bangs covering her forehead, but mostly short and down the nape of her neck; however, near the sides of her face, there are longer pieces that go down to past her collar bone, which is where the shift from sea green to blue happens.
Eye color: Aqua green
Height: 5'4â€
Dress: She attends Miator, so she wears the uniform most of the time. When she's not wearing that, she'll most likely be in her typical dance uniform, which consists of an open-backed, black leotard with straps criss-crossing over it; underneath that, she wears tights of various colors, but most often purple or blue, that cut off at about mid calf. If she's in regular clothes, she often opts for low-slung skinny jeans, and a one shouldered black top, a little loose on her. No matter what she's wearing, she always has on a blue bracelet, explained below.
glasses: No
History & Personality: Yarei has never met her mother. Her father is an architect and Japanese citizen; he met her mother while on a three-year residency in New York City when he was working with a corporation to design their new headquarters. Her mother was an American university student studying dance. He got her pregnant, and after a hard talk, the two decided that he would keep Yarei. Her mother was too intent on becoming a dancer to have a child. Yarei's father took her back to Japan and has never really discussed her mother, which bothers her occasionally but not so much any more. She doesn't know that her mother was a dancer, but her father was surprised when she first indicated an interest in it. He encourages her, despite knowing virtually nothing about it, through a sense of guilt.
Yarei grew up in Kyoto, living with her aunt's family while her father worked on buildings in other countries. She went with him on his most recent trip to Russia and studied at a prestigious ballet school there before returning and enrolling at St. Miator's. She became interested in dance when she was very young – her first year of elementary school, in fact. Other girls were doing it, and she decided to try it as well, and she absolutely fell in love with it. She has always done ballet, but she prefers modern, then jazz. She can dance in musical theatre pieces, and can do a bit of hip-hop if she really has to. She hates tap. She is very serious about her dancing and would like to visit New York City one day to see musicals and perhaps try out for an American dance company.
Dancing, while being almost all she does and the only thing she truly loves in life, consequently gave rise to her biggest problem and flaw. Yarei is bulimic, to put it simply. More accurately, she is EDNOS: Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. She has incredibly irregular eating habits which include cycles of starving herself, binging, and mostly commonly, purging by forcing herself to vomit. She has lived this life style starting at age twelve, and has successfully hid it from her father and aunt, which is easier than it might sound since both are professionals and shuffle her back and forth rather often, so they're unable to keep with her eating habits, even if they noticed. That is why she wears the blue bracelet: it represents her disorder, and discreetly alerts others with eating disorders that she is a “mia†by the color blue. She has chosen not to seek help for no other reason than the fact that it's how she deals with almost everything. Her intensive dancing forced her to mature much faster than most other children because of the dedication and work that it required, as well as the fact that it meant spending a great deal of time with older girls. She doesn't remember how she got started, but it was always something she was vaguely aware of, the other girls constantly talking about their weight and the constant reminder of body image, not only in competition with other dancers, but with oneself as well in the studios walled in with mirrors.
Her eating disorder gradually made her more withdrawn from people than she already had been because of her commitment to dance. She's not an unpleasant person, just mostly silent; she's the type of person who everyone knows and no one has a problem with, but if anyone ever wanted to know something about her or where she was, no one would be able to even make a guess. She occasionally tags along with groups of people when they go out, giving her the appearance of generally being sociable, but she doesn't really have any close friends. Her eating disorder is almost all-consuming; it's what she thinks about all the time if she can't cover it up with rehearsing choreography. This continued behavior has led her into cycles of relatively intense depression, which is not helped by her lack of a room mate, who might be able to stabilize her a bit.
Despite all of this, she can often put on a generally serene face or attitude, which leads virtually no one to be alarmed. Her grades are on the high side of average with B's and B+'s, and she's always willing to help classmates with problems if she has the time. She enjoys going to clubs, the movies, and playing late-night games of cards. She does enjoy the occasional glass of wine to get tipsy with friends, but not more than that; she's only smoked a few times in her life, and never does drugs. She loves designer clothing, which her father occasionally indulges.
