Inevitably, Rafe opened the window, though with it being right beside the bed he was met with a snarling Lira who sat up to block his view of Thrae, who cowered behind her. Lira felt her eyes glow, as she glared at the intruder.
Rafe didn't seem to notice the supernatural event,
"Will you move? I'd like to speak to the princess." said Rafe, giving her the same look one might give to a pile of horse waste after having stepped in it. Lira growled, how rude. Thrae peeked around the other girl's tan shoulder.
"What is it?" She peeped quietly, "Why are you calling me princess?"
It was the time of night where everything seemed to look blue. Even inside the room, Rafe looked quite handsome, his blonde hair tied back, shining in the moonlight, the cut of his jaw easily giving him the apperence of an elf. But to Lira, he looked like a pitiful goblin worm squirming it's way into her territory.
"You must be, for your beauty is unmatched." He replied. Lira was already fed up, at least he didn't know. And she knew Thrae wasn't a princess. Or was she? Did unicorns have princesses? Regardless this man had no way of knowing about that.
She felt the girl behind her move, probably blushing, but Lira insisted her glare on the young man.
"But sir," said Thrae, "I haven't a thing to my name, and I can never return to my home. If I am a princess I am a poorly one." Thrae felt sad at that, she was awfully homesick. Unicorn or not she wanted to go home, but she knew having this curse would inevitably ruin her happy life. How could she possibly ever find love this way? Even if Rafe had taken a liking to her, she could never tell him. Oh fairy godmother..what have you done to me? She thought.
"What fool said a princess must have possessions to be a Princess? You are my May Queen and I wish to be your Green Man, let me pursue you."
Pursue her he would certainly not! Thought Lira. The refrence to the pagan tale of how the Green God persued the May Queen, as she coyly ran around the world. In the end he caught her, and they consumated their love, which ended in the May Queen becoming pregnant and giving birth to all life. Thrae wouldn't know this man intended to defile her, but Lira knew.
"You," she inturrupted, roughly grabbing is throat, claws starting to grow as her eyes began to shift to a dragonic orange with a bubbling anger. "Are not welcome in a ladies presence, especially whilst she is undressed. You will leave us."
"Tame your dog m'lady," Said Rafe, holding Lira's wrist where she held him.
"Lira! Let him go!" Thrae whispered, upset by the act of violence. Why was she acting so mean? Ridgidly, the red-head complied and let go. She looked at her doe, "Thrae we need to leave, it's not safe here."
"What?" asked Thrae, how did she know? She was a dragon, maybe they could sense danger? Wouldn't that mean she should sense it too? She over reacted to the statement becoming afraid and looked at Rafe.
The older man looked at the two, smiling, looking rather smug in Lira's opinion. "I promise I mean neither of you any harm." He said. Lira, was fed up. He had, in her mind, threatened Thrae and now would not leave. He reached past her to touch Thrae. Lira hit his arm away with a scowl, but then is face changed, eyes becoming wide.
Finally some fear. Thought Lira, but no, it wasn't fear. A loud -Clump- sent Lira flying around to look in horror as a unicorn fell off her bed. Why now? What was happeneing?
Thrae's mind was frantically wondering that herself. Was this the danger? Her unicorn self stood up,
"I knew it!" Shouted Rafe. Lira ripped the blanket off the bed and grabbed their dresses. With the brown fabric hiding her nudity, "Hurry!" She yelled opening the door. Thrae ran through the house, the sound of her cloven hooves waking the others as she clumbsily hurried though the kitchen and out the wider front door into the night.
Lira ran too, blanket flaring behind her legs. Rafe didn't seem to pursue, and she could hear Gwedella's voice but she was too busy running to understand the words. Why had she transformed? What did Rafe mean? Far into the forest, they were more lost than ever.
When they could rest, she looked at the unicorn. "What happened?" She asked, honestly wondering.
"I don't know I-" Trae began to say, but instead of words a stressed whinny was all that came out.
Lira threw the blanket and dress over the creature's back, Thrae shuttered with surprise. Lira put on the green dress. "Now we don't have anywhere to sleep." Nevermind that sleeping on the ground or in a cave would have been normal for a dragon. Thrae wasn't stupid, she caught that, frustrated she let a puff of air out through her lips and began to stomp away. Lira had ruined their conversation a little, but now Rafe would never want her, nor love her.
Lira struggled to do the buttons herself and only managed the bottom few, the rest hung slack leaving her back exposed. She stomped after the unicorn too. Were they fighting?
"It's not MY fault you turned into a bloody horse. But I'd like you to know that man wanted more from you than you'd fancy to give I'd bet."
Thrae snorted, still walking away determedly. Lira stormed behind her, more angry at Rafe than anything, but annoyed at Thrae's inconveinient transformation. But even so, she was beautiful, the moonlight speckled her white fur as it splashed down through the trees, she seemed to shine. Even as a lion-like tail swished at her.
Thrae was upset. What had caused this change? And now Lira was upset, she was afraid the dragon-lady would somehow understand that she wasn't truley a unicorn. But then again, Lira's anger at not sleeping in a bed made her wonder. Maybe...but how could a girl become a dragon and not be fay? Unless...
She stopped to look at Lira, who stopped to look back at her, challenging her, but her gaze melted to one of sympathy. "I'm sorry Thrae," Lira said feeling guilty, she wouldn't be the only one sleeping without a bed tonight.
The unicorn blinked and then looked at the ground, Lira's touch on her side and neck was comforting, even after all the embarrassment and confusion. She lay down where she stood. Lira pulled up one side of her mouth in defeat as she joined her friend, leaning against the swell of her belly. Spreading the blanket over the two of them. Maybe things would look better in the morning.
