Mimi sat in one of the side rooms of the church. She had been listening to the choir during their practice. It was so nice to hear such beautiful music, or sometimes not so beautiful. It was a practice after all and you had to give some slack to people who were learning new things. She kind of wished to join them but that wasn't going to be allowed, not by her grandmother at least. Plus it was a very different kind of music. Mimi preferred smaller groups to large groups, though orchestral music was beautiful in its own way. It sounded even better in the cavernous church. She smiled a little, as much as she ever did in her normal emotional state.
Now that practice was over, they all seemed to be leaving. Mimi hoped none would hang around. There was something nice about an empty building, well, an empty building apart from you. The echoing footsteps, the shuffling sounds, everything was amplified. She wished she could set up speakers and let her parents' music echo, or the music she liked. Something to fill the church and surround her. Headphones were close but it wasn't the same as free sound. Sound that was surrounding you, though if you closed your eyes, you could almost imagine floating on a sea of sound. Close wasn't the same though. Still, headphones were what she had so headphones were what she would make do with.
She plugged the headphones into her phone and let it go random. She kept the music low though, Mimi had no interest in being surprised by somebody walking into the side room. Though why they might do that, she had no idea. It wasn't like there was anything here but excess desks. Still, she found herself drifting away on the waves of sound. And it didn't take very long for her to go dead to the world and fall asleep.
