Today was the day. She'd finally meet her kohai that would serve as her maid while she helped with her studies. It wasn't much like Hitomi to worry, but when she did it was always with a tinge of anger and a little self-doubt thrown in there. Maybe the card she had made hadn't been to their liking. No, she had made it perfectly. The symmetry was phenomenonal. The colors were warm and inviting. Maybe the girl was just running late. No excuse. What if she got lost?
Hitomi was beginning to burn a section of carpet as she paced back and forth across the room. Arms were crossed across her diaphragm and her golden gaze was locked on the floor. Then it shifted upward as she passed by her mirror. A quick pause allowed her to check over herself.
"Always be the perfect picture of a lady. Don't mess your face up with ugly emotions."
The dark haired girl wasn't exactly sure who the voice in her head belonged to, but it sounded an awful lot like her mother. Once her face was clear of her nervousness, Hitomi tucked a few strands of hair back in their correct place and smoothed her hands over the tie of her uniform, smoothing out any crease that could have formed while her pacing took place.
"A lady has patience. Patience is a virtue. Strive for it."
A slow inhale and exhale had her calming down, except for the tiny pit of anger that was still boiling in her chest. With her face now passive, she turned from the mirror to move back to the window. It was unlikely the girl would be outside since she would have to change into her maid uniform before starting her duties. That meant she was likely already inside the dorms. But looking out at the changing leaves gave her something else to focus on instead of coming up with scenarios. The first year would explain herself when she got there. Or she would inquire about it. A clipped nod and she hugged her middle a little more tightly as she forced her emotions down. It was still early, even though she had already heard many of the girls on her floor greeting their kohai soon after their return from classes.
Finally giving up on her endeavor to distract herself, Hitomi settled on the edge of her bed and picked up a copy of Sense and Sensibility, thumbing to the page number she stopped at the night before. If it took much longer, she might just go out looking for any lost first years. What a bother..

Today was the day. One Hikaru Shinguji would ascend from her meager status as a new first year student to the full Miator girl experience. This was still her first week and Hikaru had already heard all kinds of things about the sort of place that Miator was. It got really hard to tell whose words were accurate and whose were just rumors founded on stories based on word of mouth. What she gathered was that Miator was the most formal and traditional of the three schools and was populated largely by very noble and formal girls you only really read about in books. So many fancily dressed ladies in fact that Hikaru worried if an orphan girl like herself would fit in at all. Sure she could dress in the same uniform as the other Miator girls but honestly she couldn't do much more than play the role unless she learned how to be a proper one. So in a way she was going into a situation where she would have a mentor to help her adjust to life in the fancy lane. Of course she'd also heard some things about the older girls at Miator from classmates that were.. less than appealing. A couple of them talked about how scary the older girls were, demanding that every little thing be done according to their own particular idiom. One apparently barked orders at her first year maid as if they were in the military! Big sisters could be really scary if those stories were to be believed. Hikaru was therefore having a hard time getting herself mentally prepared for reporting in to her own senpai. The girl's name was Akahana Hitomi, which sounded very aristocratic as far as Hikaru was concerned. Just the type of person who was going to insist on having tea at a particular time or something! What if she grabbed the wrong kind of tea? What if the lady liked coffee more than tea? Oh, the agony of choice! For these reasons Hikaru had ended up running late for her appointed meeting with her senpai. First she'd had to get into her maid uniform so that she would be all ready for serving her lady's needs. After fretting about her appearance for four times longer than she thought she probably should have - she wanted to get the choker just right - Hikaru had prepared hot water and three different tea bags for her senpai to choose from. Then just to make sure that she had all her bases covered she'd gone down to a vending machine and gotten a can of Boss Coffee in case Hitomi-oneesama preferred that to tea. This she poured into a cup before setting the whole service up on a tray. Only once she had all of that together did Hikaru make the perilous trek upstairs to deliver the beverages to her new senpai. All the while her stomach was filled with butteflies and she had to move slowly to ensure she didn't spill anything. Imagine being on the job for the first time only to spill everything right in front of her lady! Hikaru could already hear the lecture that would inevitably ensue from that, so to ensure that she wouldn't have to hear one she moved carefully rather than quickly. When at last she arrived at Hitomi's door she carefully balanced the platter in one hand before knocking on the door. Then she took the platter back in both hands and nervously called out, "a-ahem... Hitomi-oneesama? May I come in? I'm Shinguji Hikaru, your maid.."

Five minutes after Hitomi had picked up the English book, she set it back down. She had reread the last paragraph at least twenty times and hadn't retained a word of it. Another sigh parted her lips- "A lady does NOT sigh, Hitomi. Even while not in the presence of others." Hitomi quickly closed her eyes and ran her fingers over her temples, lightly rubbing them. Instead of following the instructions of the voice in her head, the girl flopped back on her bed with an even bigger sigh than before. Take that. She draped an arm over her eyes and let her body relax after shifting on to the bed. Maybe just a little nap would allow her to relax and get away from that voice for a while. She always hated being corrected.. Especially by her mother.
Hitomi felt herself slipping away and welcomed the comfort of silence with open arms. She had been studying a little too late into the night lately, since she had been busy going over the minutes of the student council meetings throughout the day. So, instead of the nap she had been planning to take, she fell into a deeper sleep. The knock on the slightly open door didn't even stir her. She stayed perfectly still into the position she had rolled to. On her side, one arm tucked up under her head in a makeshift pillow while the other hand was tucked under her cheek. Stocking covered legs were drawn up, but she had been smart enough to kick her shoes off so they didn't leave dirt on her blankets. The voice was all it took to jerk her out of her dreams though and she quickly sat up.
And then she started panicking. Her hair to be a mess! Why hadn't she thought about this before she laid down? Hitomi practically launched off the bed, grabbing the edge of her uniform to tug it back into place before running both hands through her hair to straighten it back into a inky cape. Even though she had been panicking just a moment ago, her voice came out as smooth as silk and her appearance was immaculate. She stepped up to the door, grasping the handle to pull the cracked door open to reveal.. a far too adorable maid standing there with tea and coffee. She wasn't late at all. She had been preparing well for this. Hitomi stood frozen for many moments, just looking at the girl as a very light pink colored her cheeks. If she hadn't been so well trained she probably would have let out a very girly squeal and begun fawning over the girl. Instead she stepped aside, letting Hikaru into the room.
"You're welcome here anytime, Hikaru-san. It is nice to finally meet you." The golden eyed girl smiled ever so slightly, barely moving her lips as she left her hand on the door knob then slowly closed the door behind the maid after she stepped inside. "Very thoughtful of you to bring refreshments." Hitomi glanced over the tea and.. was that coffee? Oh, this girl was a heaven-send. She loved coffee. But coffee was not a lady's drink. So she never had the chance to get any, unless she snuck downstairs after curfew and that rarely happened, because what kind of lady would she be if she broke the rules?

After her knock Hikaru stood just outside the partially open door growing ever more nervous by the second. Firstly the delay in her new senpai answering the door made her concerned that the older girl wasn't even in the room. Here she'd gone to all this trouble to prepare different teas and even coffee and she hadn't thought to check if the girl was at a club or otherwise out of the building. Believing she'd ended up failing in such an easily preventable way made Hikaru's legs feel weak, and she wondered if she ought to just head back to her room and find some way to dispose of the drinks. A good maid wouldn't let them go to waste! Then she heard someone moving about inside the room and she noticed for the first time that the door was in fact open a bit. How silly of her to think that Hitomi wasn't here - who would leave their door open when they'd stepped out for a while?
Of course this just raised the other fears she'd had en route to Hitomi's room upstairs. Who was this Akahana Hitomi whom she'd been sent to attend to the every desire of? This might very well be exactly the kind of demanding fancy lady that her classmates complained their senpais were. Her knees began to shake a little as she imagined all sorts of tirades the girl might go on over every little detail that she'd neglected without realizing it. Whether it was humanly possible to straighten every tea cozy, clean the curtains, sing a song of greeting to her sweet oneesama and then deliver properly crisp toast in ten mintues was something that she became anxious over. Those were the sorts of things a dictatorial older girl might demand of a first year maid right? Hikaru imagined her with hair in a tight librarian's bun and with a monocle for some reason, barking sharp orders as the maid scurried about to try and accomplish all the tasks. That's why they used to have scurrily maids, right? So they could scurry about and do all the chores? Totally ignorant of the misunderstood term, she worried about what she'd gotten herself into. Maybe Spica wouldn't have been such a bad place to go?
Then the door opened and she was confronted with a very pretty girl with long dark hair and golden eyes. Hikaru's knees didn't stop shaking but she did begin blushing at the sight. Those were very pretty eyes! Compared to her own dark, boring eyes they were gems shining like beacons of hope for any young maid who'd worried about her duties. Nodding meekly she stepped inside, focusing intensely just on not spilling the drinks she'd labored so hard to bring to Akahana Hitomi. The words of reassurance only slightly eased her nervousness. So her senpai seemed nice enough, even if she did exude just the overwhelming amount of sophistication which Hikaru had feared she would. That sophistication did not assault her, however, so maybe it was okay. Doing her best to stay balanced on wobbly legs Hikaru gave Hitomi an awkward curtsy while still holding onto the platter.
Once she'd half-stumbled back to full height she offered, "I thought it'd be nice to bring you a drink as a.. um.. special greeting. I mean, in case you needed it.. um.. in case you might want something. There are packets for Earl Grey, peppermint and honey lemon tea if you'd like those.. and I also brought coffee in case Hitomi-oneesama prefers that." That the coffee had come from a vending machine wasn't something she'd admit to her new oneesama. Not at all.
"Can I get you anything else, Hitomi-oneesama?" she asked nervously, hoping she'd done all right.

The older girl smiled more as she watched the girl teetering precariously with the set of teas and such. Surely it had to be heavy. It didn't help that her nerves were probably frazzled at this point. She had been the same way when she met her onee-sama all those years ago. Hitomi returned the curtsy, tucking a foot behind one ankle as she bent a bit at the waist and bowed her head. When she returned to her full height she reached out for the tray and gently slid it from the girl's hands before she could protest.
"Have the first years been spreading stories about the horrible onee-samas again? Don't worry. It happens every year. There are a few out there that treat their kohai as servants instead of their soeurs. Though, I was thinking of lecturing you on the act of punctuality. I believe it can be forgiven this time since you were preparing refreshments and it must have taken you a while." As she spoke, Hitomi kneeled next to the traditional table set up in her room and rested the platter of drinks down.
A dainty hand reached up to tuck her hair behind her ear before she motioned to the table side diagonal from her. Ignoring the voice that whispered in her ear to correct the girl's use of fillers when she spoke. A lady always thought about what she spoke before it was said, so fillers were just a sign of laziness. "Have a seat, Hikaru-san. There isn't much to do, as I don't have a roommate and I keep my space fairly organized."
Fairly organized. Ha. Her room was just as immaculate at her appearance. Books were in alphabetical order on her shelves, clothes were placed according to color and material type in her closet. Even her pens and pencils were placed in specific places. The only thing slightly out of place was the rumpling of the lilac colored throw that covered her bed and the book resting on her nightstand.
"So, you can tell me about yourself and how classes are going so far while we partake in these refreshments. Heaven knows I could never finish them on my own."

Getting reassurance from her senpai that the stories she'd been hearing were just nasty rumors did a little to calm down the slightly trembling maid. So there had been first years spreading stories about the imperious onee-samas in the past too? She supposed that did make a good deal of sense when she stopped to think about it. There had always been this arrangement with maids and onee-samas as far as she was aware, so of course stories might get passed down to the next generation of terrified maids. Hikaru found herself watching in awe as the graceful lady who lived in the room pardoned her poor punctuality before also taking the burden of the platter off of her hands. With a small sigh of relief she moved ever so slightly in the direction of the traditional table where the drinks had been placed.
And then Hitomi brushed some of her hair behind an ear! The gentleness with which she tucked the inky strands behind her ear was such a perfect encapsulation of what it must mean to be a lady that Hikaru nearly lost it. Out of all the older girls in Miator she'd been assigned to one of the coolest ones! Just that gesture showed what the school was all about - graceful refinement and generally being lovely. Of course she compared herself to Hitomi and found herself lacking in a lot of areas compared to her. There was so much she had to learn from this girl! Since she seemed nice it might even be possible to ask those questions that were going to form in her curious mind, too. In the meantime she glanced about the room to see just what Hitomi meant by 'fairly organized'. It.. appeared to be spotless. Completely spotless. Was there anything for a maid to do? HIkaru blushed as she sat down at last, letting her nervous legs have a much needed rest.
Actually she really could have used a drink right as Hitomi asked her to share something about herself. But she couldn't just take tea or coffee that belonged to her onee-sama! She didn't even know which drink the older girl preferred, much less if she'd want both tea and coffee or which it was the appropriate time to drink. Hikaru almost reached for one, then stopped herself with the hand starting to reach out for the platter. Gulping, she reminded herself that doing so wasn't polite - especially in the company of a pretty traditional fancy lady like this. Instead she folded her hands in her lap and took a deep breath to once again regain her composure.
"About me, Onee-sama? Well, there's not really much to say I guess. I just enrolled at Miator after passing the test, which was actually not as hard as people make it out to be. Or maybe I'm just really good at last-minute studying, ehe," Hikaru began, laughing nervously while immediately realizing how irresponsible that made her sound, "I mean, I study regularly of course! And I'm really excited about taking French here, since I studied it on my own at the orphanage. The sisters said I sounded like a native Frenchwoman..."
Feeling all the more silly for how she spoke, Hikaru tried to change the topic of discussion, "You really live in this room alone? Doesn't that get lonely, Hitomi-onee-sama? I'd be happy to visit you anytime you're lonely or anything.. um... ehe.. w-which drink would you like? Tea or coffee?"

Hitomi tilted her head a fraction to the left, dropping her gaze from the adorable maid's face to her retreating hand. She was about to tell her to pick whichever she liked, but Hikaru was already answering her prompts. Rather quickly, her gaze lifted and it was trained on her lips as she spoke. It was rude to stare someone down. The voice told her so.
Then the corners of her lips were lifting again. "I will have whatever you do not chose, Hikaru-san." One hand that had been resting in her lap and gestured at the platter. She would have served Hikaru whatever she liked, but that seemed counterproductive. The traditions were made so that the younger girls could learn skills passed down through the years, so she would see where she would need to start with Hikaru. Let's see how well she could serve a guest.
"The curriculum for the entrance exam isn't posted until a few months before the test, so everyone crams for it. It's fine, Hikaru. I don't bite, you know." Finally a smile pulled her lips up enough that a bit of her ivory teeth were revealed. Then she looked down at the table, feigning contemplation before she looked back up, tucking her hair back once more before pulling it over her shoulder.
"Sometimes, it is lonely. My parents refuse to allow me to have a double room. So I make due. I'm not here very often anyway. Mostly just to study and sleep. Your company will always welcome though. If you don't find me here, I'll be at the archery range. Or in a student council meeting. You can come to me for anything you need. That's what onee-samas are for, right?"

So the thing now was that the graceful fancy lady whose room Hikaru had entered was deferring to the first year student's judgment. If there were anything that were farther from the nasty rumors she'd heard about older Miator girls from her classmates, she didn't know what it was. This being said she was faced with the difficulty of trying to discern which drink her onee-sama would prefer. It was time to engage the Hikaru-super-brain-focus technique! She stared intently at the very pretty older girl and tried to figure out what drink a lady like this would like. Elegant, well spoken but lonely, kind enough to invite her to sit at the table choose which drink to have first. A proper lady that would probably like tea, and a soothing one like peppermint tea. Probably. But what if she preferred Earl Grey or honey lemon? What then? What then, Hikaru? Too many choices out there, so all she could do was defer to the coffee and hope a stronger drink was okay with her onee-sama. Biting her lip she took the cup with coffee in both hands and offered it to Hitomi.
"I'll take the tea then, Hitomi-onee-sama. Please accept this coffee with my warmest wishes," Hikaru told her, head bowed and blushing a bit more.
Once it had been taken from her she lifted her head and placed the peppermint tea bag into her cup of hot water. As it steeped she noticed that Hitomi had once again tucked hair behind her ear. There might as well have been hearts in her eyes for how in awe she was of Hitomi in that moment. This was without a doubt the most elegant fancy lady she had ever had the pleasure of meeting. And that smile just about set off girlish squealing of her own. All she could do was check her tea to see if it'd gotten mixed enough to have the right pugency of mint scent. Not just yet. Hikaru nodded and then laughed nervously at Hitoimi's remark about not biting and then looked saddened at hearing about the rooming situation. How lonely!
Eagerly Hikaru told her, "Don't worry Hitomi-onee-sama! I'll make sure to visit you every chance I get! All of your needs and desires will be taken care of! Maybe I'm just a poor orphan girl but I will do everything I can for you! An elegant graceful fancy lady with such a pretty smile deserves that and more!"
Then she blushed, "I mean.. um.. I don't know much about archery or student council work.. but I want to be around you whenever I can. You're very kind and.. um.. pretty.."

Patience is a virtue. Patience is a virtue. Patience is a virtue..
The words played over and over in her head as she quietly waited for Hikaru to pick her favored drink. She dipped her head in a slight bow as she relieved the younger girl cup she was holding out to her. Since the girl was holding it with both hands, she had no other choice then to slide her hand under the glass and the other brushed lightly against the back of Hikaru's while touching her fingertips to the rim to keep the glass from tipping over as she drew it to herself. At least she didn't have a problem with contact with other people. That could have caused a bit of awkwardness between the two, seeing as she likely would have refused to take it.
The teen brought the drink to her lips next and took a silent sip. Her eyes fell shut in bliss as she let the strong flavor linger on her tongue. Alas, her bliss was interrupted by a sudden flash of anger and this time she couldn't hold it back.
The loud sound of her slamming the glass against the wood top resounded in the pristine room and Hitomi glared down at it then swivelled that gaze up toward Hikaru. Her voice came out a lot more harshly than any previous time. "You will not talk down about yourself. Is this understood?"
After a slow intake of breath, Hitomi looked away from her kohai and down at the glass. Miraculously, not a drop had been spilled. She swallowed down a sigh and looked back at the girl, whom she had probably just put the fear of God into and proved that those rumors just might have some backing to them. "I'm sorry, Hikaru. I did not mean to snap at you. But to a lady, what is more valuable than her own self image? If you don't believe in your worth then no one else will either."
Hitomi released the glass she still had a tight grip on and gracefully rose to her feet. As she gently ran her hands over the skirt of her uniform, the girl spoke softly. "I have some treats that would go perfectly with our refreshments. Excuse me for one moment."
Really, she just wanted to get to an unseen place were she could bump the palm of her hand against her forehead for showing her temper. Thankfully the cookies were hidden away in her closet, fallbacks for a rainy day. She retrieved the sugary snacks and returned to the table, resting the tin in the center of the table before removing the lid. A gentle, apologetic smile touched her lips and she bowed her head a bit while settling back in her spot.
"Help yourself. You may have as many as you like. I have another batch being sent at the end of the week."

Up to the present Hikaru had been growing steadily more comfortable sitting in for drinks with her new onee-sama. Those stories about tyrannical older students ordering around their first year maids were probably just rumors if the older girls were more like Hitomi. She hoped that she could provide some sort of support and comfort to the fancy lady seated across from her, even if it were just little things here and there. Hikaru had thought that someone who was constantly in lonely sounding situations would be happy to hear that someone was willing to accompany them. Make their world a little less lonely! Surely Hitomi deserved much better than the solitude it seemed her parents wished upon her. She took the cup of tea and let the strong scent of peppermint waft into her nostrils, filling her mind with relaxed and calming thoughts. That calming was especially needed after the fancy lady's hand had brushed against her own in the coffee hand off - even her touch was ladylike! This would all be okay. Then a crash ripped her out of the calm moment as Hitomi suddenly reprimanded her for talking down about herself.
Hikaru goggled at the graceful fancy lady whom she'd thought was a kind hearted onee-sama instead of the imperious dictator some of her classmates had supposedly ended up with. Nothing registered in the first year's mind that would have brought about that kind of a reaction. All color brought into her cheeks by earlier blushing blanched out as she struggled to understand what had set the older girl off. As Hitomi tried to apologize to her Hikaru just half-heartedly nodded in order to not defy the suddenly upset girl. Once Hitomi had gotten up to get refreshments, she mentally raced to retrace her steps and see if there was anything remotely close to what Hitomi had yelled at her for. All of it, she thought, had just been offering support and praising the girl. So what was it that had made her mad? Uncertain of the answer Hikaru's mind began to wander again and by the time her hostess had returned with cookies, Hikaru was trembling a bit. All of the possibilities had shaken her so much that she didn't know where to even begin asking, or if she even should. Maybe it was better to not even ask about it and try to move on from that as if nothing had happened. Being offered cookies was another challenge for the poor maid - she wasn't sure if it was a genuine 'take as many as you like' or a test to see if Hikaru had any restraint or manners. Not taking any would be impolite but taking more than a couple might be construed as gluttony.
"Thank you for your kindness, Hitomi-onee-sama," she spoke meekly, reaching over with a trembling hand to take just a single cookie. Better safe than sorry. She set it down on the platter next to her tea and wondered what she should do next.
Thinking it might be a safe topic, she asked, "So.. what do you do for leisure, Hitomi-onee-sama? I mean, you must be busy and all but.. um.. well.. what do you enjoy doing?"

She had to make up for her outburst. Hitomi had just told the girl that the rumors were just that, rumors. Now she was backing some of them with her sour attitude. If only she could think of something to say. It seemed Hikaru was going to beat her to the chase though. She wanted to know about her. That only made her feel more guilty. But, a lady never shows her feelings on her face. A lady's face should never be marked with an ugly expression, Hitomi. So she kept a relaxed expression on her face as she wrapped her hands around her glass. This turned to a slight smile as she looked down at the cup, cheeks lighting a bit with embarrassment.
"Promise you won't laugh." She glanced at the girl out of the corner of her eye to guage her expression. "I like to knit. Knitting and books keep me from being lonely, really." Then she looked back down at the glass. "But I love archery. It's what I spend the most time on other than school."
Hitomi then trained her gaze on the girl's singular snack, reached out, lifted a few more cookies and placed them on her plate before loading a few on to her own. Sweets were one of her guilty pleasures and really, who could pass up on more sweets? Thankfully, she had a high metabolism so no matter how many cookies she had she didn't gain a pound even with the minimal amount of exercise she went through.
Once this was done, the girl settled back down on the floor only to reach over to Hikaru. This caused her to shift up onto her knees and come a little closer to the girl. She paused a moment just before touching her, but then let her fingers brush the collar of her uniform as she straightened the ribbon artfully tied around her neck. It was then she decided to make up for the snap before.
"I meant what I said before, Hikaru. I would enjoy having your company."
A soft smile and she was back where she started, lifting a cookie to her lips to take a dainty bite as if nothing had just happened at all.

The maid assigned to Hitomi Akahana was pretty confused by the whole situation which had presented itself since her arrive in the room. Battling thoughts over the truthfulness of the rumors about older students concerned her more so than the amount of snacks to take had. So far the older girl had given her hints toward both being a kind lady who was far from a tyrant as well as being a bossy senpai who was always right. Confrontation was something which Hikaru always tried to avoid at whatever cost, so getting confronted hadn't really helped her adjust to the environment. She just sat there with a somewhat fearful, more overtly anxious expression as she awaited more indication of what sort of person Hitomi was. Her response to the question would go a ways toward establishing which personality was more the norm. Which one was the real Hitomi-oneesama? Hikaru was leaning forward on her knees as she awaited the answer to what the older girl's pastimes were.
Being told not to laugh made Hikaru put on her most serious face, thinking that this would be a really important admission. The perfect image of an attentive student Hikaru waited to hear what it was that the elder student did to keep herself busy. Upon hearing that this included knitting and books, she blinked in honest surprise. She didn't really know what she'd been expecting to hear the older student say - maybe something about researching bloodlines or seeing how many first years it took to clean a messy storage room in an hour? What the girl had actually told her seemed really normal and feminine, just what you would expect a fancy lady to be interested in. Archery seemed a little more masculine but not too much; Hikaru recalled seeing pictures of dozens of young ladies at a shrine in Kyoto dressed in fine kimono and firing arrows at far off targets. Hikaru nodded to herself - this was pretty much confirmation that Hitomi was more nice fancy lady than mean empress of the fourth years. Granted she didn't know when to expect the older girl might snap at her again, but that snapping didn't seem to be something that would be a regular occurrence. The true nature of Hitomi was reinforced by the surprising addition of cookies to the meager one which Hikaru had taken earlier. So it seemed she was trying to make things better by resuming her pleasant voice and displaying her generosity. Tentatively Hikaru started smiling a little bit, though you could easy tell by the twitching corners of her mouth that she was still pretty nervous.
"O-okay, well you have it, Hitomi-oneesama. I promise to help you with anything you would like me to help with.." Hikaru responded, trying to find her own confidence again, "And your hobbies.. um.. interests... um.. they sound very lovely. I would never laugh at you either! Unless you told a funny joke, but then I'd be laughing at the joke, not you.. um.."
She took a deep breath and added, "Archery is really neat too, so it's impressive to hear how much you love it.. I.. I'd like to read with you or maybe learn how to knit myself. I'm not much good at knitting or archery, but I'd love to try if you're there with me."

"I would gladly teach you anything you like, Hikaru-san. As long as I know how to do it, that is. To be truthful, I don't know how helpful of a sempai I will be." A hesitant giggle filled the space she took to think of her next words. "I'm afraid I'm terrible at science and average at math." Not like she ever scored less than fifth place in any of her exams. Then her fingers began to fidget with the ends of her hair until the voice in her head came to the edge of cursing at her. Instead, she dropped them to her lap and sat perfectly still.
"Knitting and other subjects shouldn't be much trouble.. Archery on the other hand, is a sport of tradition. Like any other tradition it is meant to be kept the same way or it would not be tradition. If you want to learn it, I will teach you, but it will be hard work."
The teen tipped her head to the side, a bit like a cat listening for a mouse scurrying through the walls. She kept her eyes trained on her kohai, as if sizing her up. "You have the correct posture and body form for it. May I see your hands?" The dark haired princess extended her own, palm upward for Hitomi to place hers on. While this went on, she offered a true and bright smile to the girl. "Why don't you tell me about your hobbies? What's your favorite subject of study? And perhaps a favorite book?"
She could tell the girl was nervous and hoped that if she spoke while she examined the length of her fingers and width of her palm, it would make her less anxious. Hitomi really didn't want the girl to be so nervous. It was hard to speak to someone that was practically trembling.

Upon hearing that Hitomi-oneesama actually was not a perfect fancy lady when it came to everything under the sun, Hikaru just looked up at the girl in awe. This fancy lady was confiding a secret in her! At least it sounded like a really big important secret to admit that you weren't good at science or math. This presented a dilemma for the first year wearing a maid uniform. Accomplished at academics herself, Hikaru wasn't too bad with math and actually really enjoyed science and all the amazing things you learned in it; she especially loved astronomy and paranormal things. One of those things wasn't actually taught in classes but that didn't matter! Maybe Hitomi-oneesama could use some help with those subjects since she admitted to struggling with them. Yet wasn't it bad form to offer tutoring to an older girl, especially at a very traditional school like Miator? For the moment she cast her idea aside and watched carefully as the older girl played with her hair a little before reassuming a very ladylike posture. She was so fancy!
"You.. you really think so, Hitomi-oneesama?" Hikaru asked, starry eyed as she acquiesced to the older girl's request without paying much attention to her own actions. Her hands were extended to be held in Hitomi's waiting palms while Hikaru reveled in how amazingly fancy, graceful and ladylike her oneesama was. This was wondrous! That smile too.. it was bright and genuine, the sort that would set anyone's heart aflutter.
In response Hikaru nodded, smiling as she answered, "Well.. I do like to read, even if it's just a few novels here and there. I also really like helping people out - it's not really a hobby but it makes me feel really good inside! Um.. I like window shopping sometimes, since I don't really have a lot of money to spend. Music's really nice to listen to.. and um.. actually my best subjects in school are science and French. I really like astronomy... andghoststoriesandstuff... but that's kind of silly for a fancy lady to be reading."
Then she realized that Hitomi's soft, smooth ladylike hands were touching hers and she blushed rapidly. Then she realized something else, eyes downcast for a moment to confirm it, "Hi-hitomi-oneesama.. I'm.. not shaking anymore.."

As Hikaru spoke Hitomi nodded ever so slightly a few times to reveal that she was listening. All the while, her fingers traced slowly over the backs of Hikaru's hands. She measured her hand spans with her own as well as she could so she could find a glove that would fit her well enough if they ever practiced together. After this was done she started lightly pressing her thumbs against different areas of her palm.
"I've never been window shopping before.. that could be interesting." One last touch and she gave both of Hikaru's hands a squeeze. "Indeed, you've seemed to have stopped." The pressure point therapy the priest of her home shrine had taught her worked wonders on sore muscles and shaking hands. So after feeling her trembling, she thought she might as well try. Especially since Hikaru was rather oblivious to her motions. It was heartening to know she had helped the girl relax, even if it was a bit forcefully.
"Ghost stories are some of my favorite to read as well. Especially the suspense filled ones. Anything fantasy really. I've read enough history books to last me a life time. Though novels are a bit trivial, I enjoy them throughly."
Hitomi paused for a moment then slowly drew her hands back. "Maybe sometime you can teach me some easier ways to go about science? I think I may be.. looking at it in a too.. straightforward way." The slight blush on her cheeks and hesitation between words were proof that this was a bit hard for her to ask, but they were forming a lasting bond here, right? Might as well get it all out there, so their relat-friendship started off on truths.
