Lorelei sat on a bale of hay with her back up against one of the stalls. Laid against her knees was a large sketch pad and she occasionally would take one of several pencils that were in her mouth out and add a bit more detail to the picture. Her pad was filled with art, most of it was of Brutus or of mechanical parts. She'd never really gotten the hang of imagining things that weren't static pieces of machinery so she rarely bothered drawing anything other than motorcycle diagram plans and whenever Brutus did anything cute. Brutus was about 80 percent of the notebook and was the only thing worth looking at. Still, she wanted to expand her horizons and if she couldn't have real horsepower, horse power might be interesting too. She'd enjoyed watching some of the other girls take their horses around the track. She was a bit envious too, of course the shoe would be on the other foot when they just had their horses and she was on a fully functional high speed all terrain off roading motorcycle with adjustable seats and an otter. She'd be the one having all the fun then.
So after classes, Lore took a walk to the corral to have a look and maybe sketch some of the horses. Unfortunately, the horses out in the open were being ridden and she didn't have any interest in dealing with or sketching a person. So the girl made her way to the stables where she could at least give a go at sketching a horse. There was a benefit that it was less like to move and ruin her view of it, but a down side was that it wouldn't be a sketch of the horse being graceful in movement. Lore decided that she could just add flowers and trees to the background and it wouldn't look so depressing. Inside the stables she'd found a beautiful specimen. Proper noble and regal steed. The name on the sign was Leone. It reminded Lore of home and as if it was destiny she took out her tools and began to work.

She had been antsy all day. Classes tended do that. All that time spent sitting in some room at a desk and listening to someone lecture on and on about this and that. Charlie did try to pay attention. And her little figment often attempted to snap her out of whatever reverie she would wander off in. That was the annoying part about her. She was always focused on doing some actual learning in class. But, the day was over! She had survived, yet again.
Charlie made a brief stop to her room. She wanted to shed the white uniform in favor of a more practical outfit. Jeans, her ever present boots and hat, a plain t-shirt and a flannel shirt on top. She strolled around campus, with a confident strut. Already, she could hear a few whispers about her Canadian cousin. The girl must have left quite the impression. Whatever the case may have been, Charlie was here now. And once more of these girls saw what SHE could do on a horse, then there would be quite the buzz.
Upon reaching the stables, Charlie found things much more quiet. She was sure that Leone would be up for putting on more of a show, so it was kind of a shame. At the very least, she could practice a few moves and not have to worry about falling on her face in front of others. Inside the stable, proper, Charlie found that her Azteca already had a visitor. A girl perched on a bale of hay with a sketchbook in hand.
"Leone, you sly dog..." she chuckled, "Can't leave you alone for a minute, now can I?"
She walked over and leaned against the stall. Charlie didn't obstruct the other girl's view of her horse. After all, if someone wanted draw Leone, who was she to stop them?
"Afternoon." Charlie said, with a tip of her hat, "Hope I'm not interrupting."

Lore looked up as somebody entered the stables. She had hoped not to be interrupted, certainly most of the girls who had come by had gone to other horses in other areas. Of course her luck hadn't held up, it never did. This girl walked towards her and the horse. Lore still held out small hope that the girl would walk on by and pretended to return to her sketch. She'd managed to get a good start on the body. The head was still very sketchy, the big horse wouldn't really keep very still for her but she could do that later, maybe from a photograph or two she could take.
Hope was dashed as the girl spoke directly to the horse and leaned against the stall. She spoke English but not like from England, she was a northerner, you could tell from the accent. Lore guessed Texas if she had a horse shipped all the way here. They were all rich off oil up in Texas with their big hats and belts. The girl certainly had a big hat. Lore didn't really understand what the girl said to the horse, she hadn't bothered learning English since she never planned to travel that far. What she did know was long lost to the Japanese that she still struggled with.
"You are." Lore said rather bluntly. "Leone is your horse? He's beautiful." She looked down at her work again and nodded. "You want to ride him. I will wait." She closed the notebook and gathered the pencils from her mouth, and the one behind her ear. Her sentences were terse and still colored by her accent. "He has been a good horse for me. May I give him a sugar box?" She'd forgotten the word for cube but box was easy enough. She had brought several to lure horses to her if she hadn't found one in the stable worth drawing. The way she drew out a cube from a handkerchief full of them made it plain that if the girl hadn't been here, Lore would not be asking. As far as Lore was concerned, the horse deserved a treat.

Now there was a frosty reception if Charlie ever felt one. Clearly, the other girl was not a fan and that was a true shame. Charlie liked having fans, they often came with such positive comments. But, one thing was for sure. Leone was a hit, even with the harshest of critics. Giving a light chuckle, she folded her arms and gave a nod of her head. "Well, so long as he's been on his best behavior." she said, "I guess he's earned a treat."
"Japanese is not her first language." the voice came first, followed by the appearance of the figure as as she sat at the edge of the bale of hay next to the artist, "Although she seems a bit more well practiced than you are. Perhaps you should take some notes."
Charlie made every effort not snap back at that little remark. When she was alone, she would have to have a few words with that pesky little fragment of her personality. Just because it knew her so well, didn't mean she had to make such snarky comments.
"But, I don't want to stop the creative process." she added, "I can wait a bit a longer if you want to finish up."
The way she figured it, if anyone deserved some time in the spotlight, it was sure to be Leone. The Azteca had always been a very trustworthy partner in her endeavors. "Hey, if you want to see him in action, stick around! He's fresh and rested and waiting for a good run."

Lore set her things down beside her on the hay bale and lightly brushed the hay that clung to her legs and the back of her skirt. Then she picked up the sugar cubes and placed on in the palm of her hand. She carefully held it out to the horse. "Here you are, Leone, thank you for modelling today." She smiled as the horse took it from her and crunched the sugar loudly while his head bobbed up and down. Suddenly she changed to speaking Spanish. "That's good isn't it? Yes. I like sweets too. Maybe I'll have more for your tomorrow." She wiped her hand dry on her skirt.
She switched back to Japanese as she turned back toward the girl who owned the horse. "The creativity is over. I can take a photo on my phone if I need to but it is for fun not school homework. I can draw him later too." She began to put her art supplies away into her backpack. She did want to watch him run, that would be neat. More than that, she wanted to try riding him. Not that she expected to ever get the chance. He was a big horse and she couldn't ride anything that wasn't a bike. Horses were very different than bikes, for one, bikes had brakes.
"No thank you. I've already started drawing him while he is standing still and trying to do one for him running would ruin my plans for a standing horse. You can't draw the same thing two different ways at once, you know." She nodded to herself. That sounded right in her head.

'Huh, she speaks Spanish.' Charlie thought to herself. It was an interesting little tidbit and one that she would keep in her back pocket for the time being. But, it would be nice to have conversation in the language at some point in time. For the time being, though, she would need to work on her Japanese. Plus...you never knew what kind of fun you could have when someone thinks they are saying something you don't understand.
The Azteca enjoyed the treats the other Spican girl provided. However, Charlie's offer was dismissed right off the bat. She gave a shrug of her shoulders in response. As far as drawing went, she couldn't quite argue that. She, herself, was not much of an artist.
"If you say so." she said, "Of course, that doesn't mean that you can't still watch."
She gave a playful wink and started to get things ready for her ride. "Me and Leone, we like to put on a good show. And you probably have not seen anything it, around here."
Given that most of these horses just performed in a race, Charlie had every reason to be confident in that statement. Even back home, horses were most commonly seen on the race track. In movies, sure, her kind of handiwork would typically shine. But, westerns were not as big as they once were. It was part of the reason why the ranch had to branch out in it's practices.

The girl accepted the excuse. It must have been correct. Lore inwardly felt a surge of success lift her spirits. "I say so, I'm an artist." She nodded to herself again. "I don't know. It's just going around the circle a lot and maybe jumping sticks sometimes." Lore lifted her hands and gave a shrug. "It's not the most of excitement thing." She kind of did want to watch Leone some more though. He was big and looked powerful. He reminded her of the great motorcycles that roared to life and aggressively announced their power to the world around them even when they were at rest. The coiled muscle, broad shoulders, noble gaze, brown leather, roaring exhaust, throbbing engine, wide handlebars. They promised a ride like you'd never felt before. A ride Lore desperately wanted. Suddenly she realized she was staring at Leone again. "I guess maybe I can watch a little while I do some homework or something." Yeah, homework was a good reason to stick around. The other girl would probably buy that.
She turned to the hay bale and finished the job of putting away her drawing tools and supplies. "I'll probably head back to my dorm after a little while though. I have a lot to do during tonight." This was not true but Lore wasn't going to show how interested she was in the horse. Besides, what fun is watching other girls do the cool stuff while she had to sit on the sidelines. Drawing the horse was better since she could do it herself and have fun.

"Oh, I do much more than ride around in a circle." she asserted. She smirked, although the boastful statement didn't appear to be needed. Providing the excuse of doing some homework while she watched, Lorelei agreed to stick around a little while longer. At this, Charlie grinned. Whatever excuse she wanted to give was fine enough, so long as she had an audience to work with. And Charlie loved having an audience.
"OK, fella...looks like your new buddy will sticking around, after all!" she addressed Leone in the familiar English language, before returning to the less familiar Japanese, "Just give me a...uh...minute. Need him ready."
She went about preparing Leone for the ride, getting all of the necessary equipment ready. Already, there was an added pep to her step, as Charlie was rather excited at the prospect of showing off a little of her skills. When all was said and done, she lead the Azteca out of the stables and towards the track.
"We're gonna have to put on a show, buddy." she added, "Luck you, though. You already seemed to have impressed her."

Lore checked to make sure she had everything before turning away from the girl and her horse. "I will wait outside to watch." She took a deep breath of the slightly fresher air outside the stables, it had been a bit stuffy in there. Next time maybe she would have to open up the doors and let a breeze flow through if she could. That might draw attention to her though and she had no interest in gaining more attention. She was already trapped in watching some silly thing by the northerner with the big horse. Still, she could see the horse move and be slightly more free than it was in the stable. That would be nice. It was not replacement for a wide open field with a wild herd but Lore was pretty sure that those didn't exist anymore.
Lore found a seat on one side of the outdoor riding area and carefully wiped off the bench. Considering she had been sitting on a bale of hay in what amounted to a barn before, it was purely a reflex action. Then Lore got out several pieces of paper and a notebook. She did say that she would be doing homework. It was a lie but once you say it, you can't abandon the lie with no effort after all. Finishing up her preparations, Lore waited to see if the northerner could deliver on the promise of impressive horse riding.

The girl was all set up to go through the proper motions of acting like she was doing homework. Charlie climbed up into the saddle and got herself settled in. Leone started off with a trot, approaching middle of the track before she eased him into a stop. She shot a glance over towards Lorelei and smirked. A loud whistle signaled her horse to start to run. It didn't take very long for him to reach a full gallop, hooves pounding the dirt track. Charlie felt the wind pick up just as quickly. A familiar surge of adrenaline coursed through her, as she leaned forward. The first lap around would be fairly mundane. A warm up round, to get back into the swing of things.
Charlie went into the next stretch and rounded the final corner. Honestly, it seemed like such a waste to just ride these animals in a great big circle. Why wouldn't you want to mix things up and really have some fun? Slipping a foot from one of the stirrups, she swung a leg around and dropped to the side. Charlie hung on, but as she passed by Lore, it would look Leone was off and running without a rider.

Lore watched as the girl got up on her horse and began to ride. She frowned, she would much rather be riding the horse or drawing it up close than watching other people enjoy riding. Still, she had been promised excitement and by god she was going to expect it. The girl quickly sent Leone into a gallop. He certainly was a powerful looking horse. She wished she could see him run freely, but she wanted that for all the horses. They pair went around the ring as normal. There was nothing special about it, having a unique horse did not make a common action any more interesting.
Then the girl slipped from view. Lore narrowed her eyes, maybe she missed something. Leone kept going but the girl had fallen behind and just vanished into the earth. That was something new certainly. Maybe this girl actually could do something cool with horses. Lore scooted forward to the edge of her seat. She did not want to miss any other magic horse tricks.

Charlie passed around, before she pulled herself up to a more traditional method of riding such an animal. One hand on the reins, the other was free to drift backwards. Her other foot was still free from the stirrup, so she would have to remain careful, especially since she would have to get her other foot loose as well. Charlie took a glance over at her one girl audience and saw that there was certainly no homework getting done. A confident grin beamed across her face.
'Gotcha!' she thought to herself. Eyes back on the track, she sized up the right time step into her next act. There were a few things she wanted to do, but it was probably better to play things a little safer. Relatively speaking, of course. When she got back to the straightaway, Charlie was positioning herself to get up on her feet. It was always a little bumpy to try to stand up on the saddle. This was where things became very easy to go very wrong.
But, the rider was soon upright, waving to Lorelei as the rounded the corner. She blew a loud series of whistles and Leone slowed his pace. But, rather than get back to her seat, she jumped for the railing. Leone continued his trot around the track, as Charlie made a run for the other side.

Lore was actually quite impressed as she watched the other girl rise into the saddle again. It was like what you saw on tv and old films sometimes. She'd certainly never seen anything like that happen for real. Lore licked her lips and her eyes were wide. The nonsense about homework had been forgotten. None of the other girls who rode their horses ever did anything like this. This northerner had some real skill. Some of the tricks would look really cool on a motorcycle too.
Lore leaned even further forward as the girl was preparing something, it looked really big. When the girl rose to her feet, Lore jumped to her feet as well. That was insane, like nothing Lore could have expected. Standing up while riding a horse at speed was unthinkable. This girl was crazy good. She watched the girl jump from the horse and Lore ran her fingers back through her own hair. This was incredible, imagine doing that on a motorcycle. That would be the coolest thing anyone could do. Especially if you could land on your feet. And this girl looked like she was going to run and remount the horse over the fence. It was amazing.

Charlie wanted to make sure she had the timing right. Getting there too soon, would just wind up with her sitting on a fence and waiting. And honestly, was there anything more boring than that? She knew what Leone's pace was and she would have to match it. She jogged across the middle of the track and kept the Azteca in the corner of her eye. He was doing his part and now she had to do her part.
Leone came back around as Charlie reached the halfway point. She took note of Lorelei standing up in the stands. What a way to nail a first impression! Once again she pondered the possibilities of riding Leone all over campus. Charlie leaped on to the fence and balance herself as Leone approached. The window was very brief, but this sort of move was one she had practiced many times.
Jumping from her position, she landed in the saddle and took hold of the reins. Leone slowed down and gave her enough time to resettle herself in her seat and get her feet back in the stirrups. He settled into an easy pace and rounded the corner once more, before she slowed him down to a stop in front of Lore. She tipped her back and grinned.
"Well, what do you think? Can he move, or can he move?"

The energy had built up in her body beyond what she could have expected. This was so cool. She hadn't seen a horse ridden like that in real life ever. That was the craziest thing. Then Charlie jumped and landed in the saddle. "Wow." Lore said in hushed tones of awe. It just kept getting cooler, like watching a movie but real. She watched wide eyed as Charlie approached on Leone. Lore shook her head and tried to act like she hadn't been impressed. If she showed too much excitement then she'd look dumb. Couldn't be impressed by a first year, after all.
Once she had her head clear, she put on a bored expression. "He can move, I guess. It is very unique, the tricks he can do." She stepped over to the two of them and lightly ran her hand across Leone's shoulder. "You did ok too, I guess." She smiled at Leone and switched to spanish. "You are such a magnificent animal. That was wonderful, I've never seen a horse move like that. You deserve more sugar. I shall bring lots with me next time." Her gaze turned back to Charlie and she switched back to Japanese. "I guess you're still working on your first tricks. Soon you can do the hard ones, I am thinking." Though what could be harder and still allowed on campus, Lore could not imagine.
