Please explain your character's personality in 200 words or more:
A little shy, stubborn, pessimistic, a band geek, and one of not much confidence in herself. Shumi is a tangled mess of uncertainty and inexperience. She isn’t afraid to speak her mind when needed, but rarely gives her opinion on things out of fear that it will upset instead of enlighten. Though still young at heart and body, she dislikes feeling like a child and wishes to grow up quick, though not to quick, as to avoid spoiling the natural lull of life. If confronted with a social situation, she will politely engage in conversation, though might end up tripping over her words. Furthermore, she is a soul that speaks not with her words, but rather, with music.
Music is her soul. So is the Euphonium. She carries it around with her everywhere – only pulling it out when she is alone. She gets nervous when asked to play in front of others, and thus forth usually plays alone when she is certain no one is around. “I’m not any good…” Is her most common excuse. When she’s not shining her Euphonium or making little charms, you can find her scrawling bars of music on blank, printed-out music sheets or on the back of her notebooks. Open her up, and you’ll find a colorful mass of music and uncertainty in a festering mass of unconfidence and low self-esteem. This makes her easy to mold; therefore, easy to manipulate. Just as is a steady stream of air into an instrument or a drifting melody.
Fun Facts
~ Her favorite song to play is “Pantomime”
~ She loves sunflowers, but sneezes if she gets near them
~ Her favorite time to play her instrument is in the evening just as it is getting dark
~ She likes to make charms for bracelets and cellphones
~ She has a snowy white ferret named “Hime” that she managed to sneak into school
What does you character think of the Etoile position as a whole?
It’s absolutely dreamy. Shumi gets weak in the knees just thinking about it! Two people working so perfectly with one another; and the whole underlying aspect of fairytale romance with it—Ah, she adores it.
Does your character want to be an Etoile someday?
She would love to, yes! Though she isn’t very confident in herself and shies away from the thought of it.
What does your character think of the current etoiles? The Etoiles are stunning to her. A perfect match! Coyote and Hiroko are something out of a fairytale to her. She can relate well to Hiroko’s shyness and would love to encourage her to be more confident in herself (though she isn’t too much herself, haha…) Coyote, on the other hand, is like a prince! She admires the girl’s extrovert nature and her love for adventure – the way she puts herself out there and everything. She’d love to meet them both one day, but doesn’t think she’s fit at all to be in their presence.
What does your character think of the other schools? Miator is a neat little school to her. Very strict and a bit stuffy, but painted with elegant clubs. She really enjoys the band program there, too. Spica, well… She’s a bit embarrassed to say it, but she would love to try on the uniform from the glorious white institute one day. Though the skirt length makes her shy away a bit. The athletics program is really intriguing to her. Lulim is absolutely adorable, meanwhile! Shumi adores everything about it from the uniform down to the fascinating hobby-favoring clubs. Like a little storybook school!
~History~
Please write in 100 words or more your character's history before she came to Miator:
Shumi grew up in the small rural town of Ehime in Japan. Here there was only a single small elementary school at the time connected to a neighboring junior high. Born to a musically inclined family, she was started on piano at an early age. Music came naturally to her, but she didn’t express much interest in the classical instrument; a grave disappointment to her famous pianist of a mother. She was labeled as a shy black sheep from the first day of elementary school. Not many ventured to speak to her, though regardless, she kept herself entertained by daydreaming out the window overlooking rolling fields of cultivated wheat and grass. In the turn of her second elementary year, she was graced by two kind-hearted faces, a young, cheery girl named Yukimae Emi and a mysterious soul by the peculiar name of Rise Sakemoto who seemed like she never really wanted much to do with the little brown-haired girl. Emi was quick to blossom a rosy friendship with the girl, meanwhile. They ate lunch together, played together, and walked home together every day. Sakemoto stayed her own mysterious lone-wolf way from the girl far into the final year of elementary school no matter how amiable Shumi tried to be. It was also among this time that she was introduced to the bassoon after her father. It was a fine instrument, but just like the piano, her heart just didn’t connect with it. It couldn’t really, at that time, because it was already clouded with another storm. That Christmas…her beloved older sister was killed in a car crash, leaving her room, her little sister, and her old golden Euphonium behind.
When someone tried to assail Shumi one day a week before graduation, Sakemoto was there to deliver a fierce blow to his midriff. “Touch her, and I’ll kill you!” It had been a frightening sight, seeing Sakemoto so riled up and angry, but it was at that defining moment that the two became friends. In the last semester, the two made a pact to join the concert band together. Shumi had decided long before that fateful Christmas that she would continue her sister’s path and play the Euphonium. When audition day arrived, she brought the gold instrument and played a duet with her dear friend who accompanied her on the trumpet. It was a lovely performance. Truly dazzling. She’d even made the audition when the results were delivered! Excited, she had ran to Sakemoto. “Look! Look, Sake! I really made it, I—“ But Sakemoto hadn’t been smiling. There had nothing but bitterness on that face. And in her hand fluttering loosely in the breeze, Shumi caught a glimpse of her friend’s audition paper. The result almost stopped her heart. ‘Not qualified.’
Things went from dreamy to disaster shortly after that. Sakemoto became distant while Emi moved up to Sapporo later that summer to stay with her newly wedded cousin. And then, late one winter night when she had chosen to stay home alone she got a phone call. The phone had clattered lifelessly to the floor. Just like her sister…her parents had died in a car crash returning home from a piano and bassoon recital. She was given the remainder of the summer to pack her things and bid farewell to the small rural town. Many neighbors crowded to offer condolences when she stepped onto the train en route to Tokyo in August with her Euphonium case in hand. It felt heavier that day than it ever had been. Her life was going to change… And she hadn’t even bid farewell to Sakemoto.
Life in Tokyo was a difficult adjustment to the rural girl. Tall, spiraling buildings, neon lights, and a cramped, small apartment occupied by her Aunt Ritsuko, three adoring cats, and a small Maltese mix. School was rough, and the people just as much so. She spent much time in her room cleaning her Euphonium, staring into its glimmering gold and daydreaming all the while. Ritsuko began to worry for her niece and soon opted to send her to Miator girl’s academy at Astrea Hill in hopes to uplift her spirits and appeal to her music-loving nature. Shumi complied without much restraint and was soon on her way to Astrea, Euphonium case secured in a trembling hand. It was time for a new life. A new tune. A new melody.

A sigh pushed past tight lips. They refused to part very much; they were being bitten down lightly in feeble hope that the pressure would prevent a wall of tears from escaping her honey-gold eyes. Starry city lights peeking out over a park below reflected in those reflected in those vibrant irises like stars. She didn’t want to leave the sleepy town. Neither further did she wish to toss all her memories in the in the older wicker chest in her room and lock them up. What would Tokyo even hold for her? All those swirling lights and neon signs… That wasn’t a place for her, but she had no choice.
The weight of the glimmering euphonium in her folded lap felt heavier. This was her only connection now. Brushing a hand over the laying instrument, she hoisted it up, touching the cold mouthpiece to her lips. A cool midnight wind ruffled through her bobbed locks, blowing wisps across her face. One last song…
Inflating her chest with a full breath, she wet her dry lips with a skim of her tongue before blowing out. Tense fingers found their proper places on the valves and pressed down in turn to whisk the monotonous low resonance into a melody. It drifted out over the empty park below, caught in the blowing wind which sailed it further into the quiet streets of the small town out further. A silver tear bubbled from the corner of the musician’s watering eyes. It glimmered brightly, mimicking the stars above, before dissolving in a silent splash as it struck the ground. A single piano tremolo among the kneeling melody buzzing through the trembling night…
