There was a sparkle, a glimmer, then a blur of woman bursting through the trees leaving maple leaves scattering behind her, fluttering to the ground in a shower of gold, red, and orange. The air was growing chilly and the girl ran on. Her heart was pounding wildly, her breath coming out in huffs as she raced past the lake, skirt rustling about her legs as she ran. The water sparkled with the setting sun, glittering like a living diamond. Her silhouette against the sparkling mass was meek, however animated with a sense of urgency. Her feet flew over the ground, arms swinging rhythmically to aid her in speed. She had to see her. Had to.
Her best friend, Lily, was moving away. She had gotten into the school she wanted and was moving there all on her own to pursue her dreams. All the while, little Emma had kept quiet, right until a few nights ago.
"You can't go!" she had cried. She had been heartbroken. Lily was her best friend, and without her, she'd be alone. She didn't make friends easily, and Lily had been there her entire life. They had been
inseparable until this point.
"Why? You just want me to stay here in this dump of a city? Don't be so selfish you know I've wanted this my whole life. Do you even know how much this means to me? Don't you even care? I'm leaving." Lily had replied.
Emma had only cried more as her friend had stormed out of the house.
"But.." she sobbed to the empty room, "Don't you know how much YOU mean to me?"
Her feelings for Lily had grown so much over the years. She had always been there, had always helped her. Emma hadn't even paid attention to guys in school. When other girls were busy with friends and boyfriends, Emma had only focused on the one person that mattered most. Lily.
Now the two were going to be separated forever, their last memories of each other a silly fight. Over the last few days Emma had decided that she would be happy for her friend, since she did care about her. Her dream was coming true, how could Emma be anything more than happy for her?
Tears stung her eyes as she approached the train station. She prayed, PRAYED that she wouldn't miss Lily's train. If anything she would have to see her friend off with a smile, even if they weren't going to be friends after this. She would end it well, she'd be strong and happy for her best friend.
Her chest hurt, her heart hurt, tears blurred her vision, she had to
get there in time. She ran up the steps toward the boarding area. She could barely see the way the light gave everything a golden glow in the late afternoon. Suddenly her foot slipped and she fell up the stairs, her shin scraping against the cold metal. She called out in pain, but grit her teeth and contuned to climb the stairs, limping as the pain throbbed with each step. She heard the train above. She had to make it to the top! She she tried harder, her leg aching badly and bleeding slightly.
However when she finally reached the top...she could see the train
already down the tracks, leaving the city. She had missed it. Her
friend was gone. The tears flowed freely down, down her cheeks and she hung her head, then covered her face with her hands.
"Lily, Lily...Lily,' she said her friend's name over and over, "I
never told you...I'm happy for you..good luck..." she cried, then fell to her knees, crying harder and said what she really wanted to say. "I didn't want you to go Lily because...because I love you! And I don't want you to leave me alone, please stay with me forever...I love you..." she collapsed into more sobs, feel empty and alone.
"You do?" Came a voice from behind her.
Emma sat up,
"Lily?" She sat up, wiping away the tears and turned to face her,
"Lily!! You didn't go? Why?" She tried to get up to hug her friend,
but fell due to her hurt leg. Suddenly she was embarrassed for having said all that aloud.
"You hurt yourself? Here let me help." Said Lilly, pulling out a
bandage from her luggage.
Emma gazed at Lilly, teary eyed. She wasn't sure how to fee. Relieved, ashamed, afraid?
"Why didn't you go?" Emma whimpered.
"I was thinking about the fight...and was still going to leave and
after what you just said..."
Emma closed her eyes and looked away, waiting for the rejection. They were both girls, Lily would definitely think she was weird, things were going to get worse, how could she ruin their friendship like this?
"I'm glad I didn't go." Lily finished.
"What?" asked Emma, turning to meet the girl's eyes.
"I love you too Emma." She smiled. Emma felt her heart melt with her body as she gazed at her. The light shone in her silky hair, and made her eyes sparkle. Lily had always been beautiful, but her pale, creamy skin and full lips seemed so much more inviting paired with those kind and loving eyes.
Lily reached out and pulled Emma close, the scent of her was so sweet. Her embrace, so warm. The younger girl, Emma, looked up, feeling dreamy, weak, and suddenly a bit hot. Lily's lips met hers softly and her embrace tightening. Emma felt a rush through her entire body and she leaned into the kiss. She tasted so sweet, she was so soft, she didn't want the feeling to end. However, Lily's lips finally left hers and when she opened her eyes. It was dark apart from the street lights and th lights of the station.
"Let's go home," Lily smiled, "You should have told me sooner."
"What about the school?" Emma asked.
"It's not as important as you. We'll open a bakery or something right here."
Emma's eyes lit up, it had been another dream of theirs from long ago.
"Promise?" asked Emma.
"Promise." Replied her friend, "Now.." Lily took both Emma's hands and pulled her up. Their bodies were so close. Emma now felt so warm despite the cold air. Lily grabbed her luggage and slung it over her shoulder, then took Emma's hand with hers. And they left the station, walking off hand in hand, their hearts as intertwined as their fingers, to live happily ever after.
