One of the most common things I see, and even I am guilty of it. Never start a post with a character's name. Its boring and doesn't pull in the reader. Instead, choose a line out of your post and start with that. Here's an example, if your original post looks like:
'Rin was walking along the path to the dorms when she saw a squirrel. She smiled watching it do what squirrels do. What a nice day for watching nature."
Instead grab another line and start with that:
'What a nice day for watching nature; Rin was walking along the path to the dorms when she saw a squirrel. She smiled, watching it do what squirrels do."
Or reword it.
'A smile spread across her face as blue eyes fell upon a squirrel. It was doing what squirrels do and Rin stopped to watch it on her way to the dorms. What a nice day for watching nature.'
On that note, notice how as I reworded the first line, a picture is painted. We see her smile, then her eyes, then the squirrel before the entire scene. It draws you in, makes you keep reading and makes it more interesting. So how do you do that?
Think about what you want to say.
"Rin was walking down the path to the dorm."
This one line could easily become a paragraph rich with detail. Talk about her hair, her skin, the temperature, sounds, her clothes. And of course, don't start with her name.
"There was a bright blue sky above, it was mid day and balmy with a slight breeze that shifted the pink Sakura branches on Astraea Hill. Flowers decorated the green grass that lined a stone walkway. On that walkway came a girl dressed in Miator garb, white petticoats shifting around her knees. Pink locks drifted around her in the wind before resting down again on her shoulders. Pale skin welcomed the warmer weather and her sparkling blue eyes watched the path ahead on her way to the dorms."
And I haven't even mentioned the squirrel yet!
